Major League Baseball (MLB) was forced to make schedule adjustments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 season featured a shortened 60-game schedule for all teams with an expanded 16-team playoff format. This format was supposed to be temporary, but MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is hoping to make it permanent. He confirmed this during a Hofstra University online event in September and added the concept has support from the “overwhelming majority” of team owners.
Only 10 teams made the playoffs prior to this season, and the schedule featured two wild card games, a five-game League Division Series (LDS) round, seven-game League Championship Series (LCS), and the World Series. The new format, if made permanent, would start with a best-of-three wildcard series in which the top eight teams in both leagues play to earn entry into the LDS. The LDS, LCS, and World Series will be a best of five, best of seven, and best of seven, respectively, as was previously the case.
